I came home yesterday to find that my smaller Green Sev has laid tons of eggs on 2 pieces of slate. She also beat the crap out of my larger Red male.

I put some Melafix in the tank and put a circle of decorations surrounding the eggs. This seemed to have helped. As of this afternoon she hasn't added anymore wounds to the male. I am not sure if the male fertilized them or not but he appears to be protective of the area as well.

Searching the internet I am not finding much information...so here is my plan and let me know if I'm doing anything wrong or missing somthing.

- Set up my 29-gal. tonite with gravel, heater set to 82F. Use media from my cycled filter to the new one and put a mesh bag over the intake tube. Let tank run overnight and test water in the morning. If all is well, move the female in. Put a bucket in my big tank and move the rocks as not to let the eggs touch the air. Transfer to new tank.

Do I have enough time for this ? Tomorrow will be day 3 ?

I heard that if the eggs turn white, then they are not fertilized....how long before I know ?

Do I add gravel or leave the tank bare ?

Will the filter intake still be too much ? (It is an AquaClear 30)

Any suggestions will help. Never done this before. Thanks !

If the eggs are a creamy colour then they are fertlised, by now you would also be seeing something almost like a black spot in them (around day 3, usually 12hr or so before they hatch).

So long as the media is mature you will be ok. Temp around 26c, You dont need gravel but can add it if you want it. If she is beating the male up, I wouldnt move him in with her as in a smaller space she could do more damange. Be aware that moving them at this stage may well result in her eating the eggs or fry if she feels something is wrong.

Would I be better off leaving it alone and removing the fry once they grow a bit ? I'm thinking the others would eat them and she may get even more aggressive once they hatch, or no ?

I would only move the female and likely never return her to that tank. The male is my Rotkeil....and my baby. I wasn't happy with the damage she did to him.

There is a very good chance they wouldnt survive and yes she will be just as aggressive once they are free swimming.

I would move the eggs, put a small bowl in the tank, fill it with tank water and lower it near to the eggs, then place them on whatever they are on/in into the bowl and then trf to the other tank, then net her and place her in the tank, leave the lights off and hope she doesnt eat them.

Thanks so much ! Will do ;)

UPDATE: She ate all the eggs before I had a chance to transfer anything. I now have fungus in the tank and am treating for it with Maroxy.

I have up stepped my project to get the pond going so I can move the Tinfoil Barbs out and maybe I will have better luck later.
