Severom Golds Cichlids Kissing?

i have 3 severom golds and 2 of them started lip locking each other and chasing each other around, what are they doing?

mating?
fighting?
playing?

first off it's SEVERUM, second thing, their fighting (we need a smilie that has 2 puttin up their dukes for a fight)
with 3 I hope you have them in a HUGE tank as sevs get rather large 6-8 inches and need space to strut their stuff, known as the "poor man's discus" they can be quit gorgeous if cared for well!

I really do think they are starting to form a pair,especially since only two of them are doing it.The signs you have said are classic.Have you noticed any of the two shimmering against each other as if they are trying to bash into each other?Or as if they are dancing lol

My advice, I had a pair of severums for about 3 years .Once you are sure the two severums have formed a pair (Ie when they lay eggs) seperate the other severum from them, if you don't they could end up killing it.Place slate and smooth stones around the breeding tank so they can lay their eggs.You will notice that they will be cleaning the surface (well usually) with their mouths (my male usto do this almost constantly).Then once the female lays the eggs the male should go over and fertilize them (I say 'should' as they sometimes forget ).The male should guard the area while the female uses her fins to keep the eggs clean and healthy.To induce spawning do weekly water changes and maybe raise the temps to about 85f .If they breed ok and raise fry I would set up a tank for their offspring.Then you can have some fun with them and maybe get some money aswell, if all goes well lol.
