If you have been reading my other thread you will see I have my first betta only just now introduced into his tank and only had him for about an hour and a half.

He is swimming around lots, having a little dart dash and flick now and then. Just want to check this is normal for a new betta and what sort of settling period are we looking at and types of behaviour that may come out?

p.s. he has already run into the filter, not liking too much I guess. Looked at the pinned topic but I dont have the bio wheel I have an internal. Will he get used to it?

Behavior is totally normal. Some fish settle in faster then others. My fish for example was eating within 24 hours. Heard others say that new fish took a while to settle in and start eating (i.e. up to a week). You can let him settle in and try feed him tomorrow. If he does not eat, fish back out the food and try again 12-24 hours later. If you are still worried after a few days, you can always holler at the forum and somebody will have good advice for you ...

I agree, it sounds like normal behaviour for a fish settling in to new surroundings. If the rubbing persists over the next couple of days though, that may indicate some sort of ailment, so keep an eye on it.

It is usually best to keep the lights off whilst they settle in too. It seems to make them feel more secure.

Cheers :good:

BTT

Brillo thanks guys, tried a bit of bloodworm nothing yet though it is the frozen stuff may get some live for him this afternoon to tempt.

Have lights near him off, there is another question out of my two choices which is better, he is not near a window but natural light or a desk lamp pointed in general viciinity of the tank not too close?

He is wonderful :)

edit: eaten1 bloodowrm and a daphnia!

Great that he started eating! Can you post a picture? As to light - as far as I know either is fine as long as it is not direct sunlight.

Decide going to leave lights off as it is relatively airy in the room and very warm right now.

Here are some piccys (same as another thread intoducing him) his name is calcifer:

Oh, thanks! I did see the other thread just didn't make the connection. Amazing fish!

Hiya, dont worry about it, i got a male betta today for the first time, hes very energetic, swimming around everywhere and he ate some flakes but psat them out, so i used some tweezers and dangled a few bloodworms inf rotn of him, he ate them.
Im only going to feed him every couple of days.
Try different foods out, shrimp, flakes, bloodworms, may just be a fussy eater but im sure he's just setlling in he'll soon get hungry.

Well he LOVES bloodworm and the treat of brineshrimp. Got the pellets today put 3 in. He ate one after abit of "chewing" but the other two mouthed and spat out. He has been through a lot with the change of tanks, food and space, but he is my little trooper!

haha 'little trooper' aww :).
I need to start doing my water changes in the morning and adding more silk/live plants i want it to be like a jungle in there!
