Ok I found out yesterday that we have been accepted for a house, so now I'm starting to wonder what would be the best ways to help settle a dog into a new home. Ok we wont be moving in for a few weeks as it will need decorating etc and need to make sure that the garden is secure.

I was thinking that whilst my partner and his family do the decorating taking Ty up for a walk to the house, its only about 20mins (prob an hour now lol as getting slow) walk from where I live now, so that he can get used to it and its grounds. But I dont think a couple of visits will be enough to have him settled when we move in.

Luckily there is a park really close to the house too which will be great for walking him. I'm so not looking forward to moving in esp before x-mas (part of me hopes the place isnt ready until after) Another reason I dont want to move in so soon is that I'm still working and it wont be good for Ty to be cooped in the house all day whilst me and Chris are at work all day at least if we stay at my dads there will be someone there during the day to let him out.

Any tips on how I can help Ty settle in would be great, perhaps once again I'm worrying for no reason but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

glad you've got your own place sorted, sure you'll love it!

i think getting him used to it by visiting is a great idea, and I'd make sure at least the first few days he's there full time there's someone in the house with him, but other than that I wouldn't worry too much.

as long as he's got you, chris and all his stuff that he's used to then he should settle fine. and especially as he's got a lovely park to walk in nearby he's going to love it!

:D

when ever we have moved we have taken all our dogs with us while we have decorated and by the time we have moved in they are used to the place

When we have moved, we always bring the dog with us (lol of course) and we let the dog roam around the house for a while on his own. We don't ban him from rooms etc, we let him take his time and go through, that is, if the dog is older and doesn't eat stuff he shouldn't.

Have a set area for his stuff, like his bed. and his food and water put it in the spot you will have it for the next while. that way he can easily get familular with it.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks guys I'll take all that into consideration. I found a flaw in my plan last night, I decided to trek up to the house and back with him straight from work, talk about feeling shattered when I got back, starting to wonder if I'll have the energy to walk up on a weekend do some decorating and then walk back with Ty. (Cant see Chris letting him in the car :sly:) will have to find another way of doing it. Possibly could take bus to town and then one out again would take twice as long but would mean less walking for me lol...

I'm getting lazier and lazier now, good thing about last nights walk was I slept like a log for once which made a nice change. Then again this time next month no more work for me just plenty of time to relax (I wish.)

Now I just need to start making plans for when I go into hospital, too many things to plan for I should have just stuck with having the dog would have been much easier.
