Setting up a dwarf cichlid tank

Hi, I have an empty 3' by 1' by 15" high tank that I'd like to set up for dwarf cichlids like Apisto Borelli, Agassiz etc. I know it should be 1 male to 2 females. Could I fit 2 trios in this size tank, and if so, would they have to be the same species? Which is the easiest type to start off with? I plan to plant the tank quite heavily and have lots of little caves etc. Should I just put the apistos in, or are they okay with a few companion fish like a small plec and some neons?

Sorry for so many questions, I just want to get it as right as possible!
