I'm formulating a list of what I would need if I go for the tank/sump option based on a 50g main tank, and just wondered if someone could check over and add to my list?

Sump pump - lfs recommended oceanrunner 2500
2 powerheads of 30xhr - can you recommend a make/model?
Lighting - think I should go straight for metal halide - what would you recommend?
Skimmer - no idea what to buy on this one!

Then obviously stuff like testing kits, RO water, LR, substrate, salt etc.

What have I missed?

Thanks :good:

What are teh dimensions of the tank and are there any center braces on top?

btw, they reccomended a good pump. How are you gonna do an overflow?

Stupidly I didn't take the tank dimensions, I have no idea why :-(

The sump is 76cm long, 28cm front to back and 38cm high.

The main tank is 50g total capacity on a cabinet which is 130cm long, 32cm front to back and 136 cm high from floor to hood.

Hopefully that's enough information to get a rough idea of main tank dimensions? I meant to ask for make and model etc., but I had so many questions I forgot some of them. I was on the phone for ages picking their brains, I must say they are a very good store and certainly seem to know their stuff. Not sure re: centre braces, think there were but can't remember for sure. I'll be going back to the store in the next few days so will get more info then.

They offered to advise in terms of setup so presume I can discuss in more detail things like overflow if I decide to go that route.

Well, I hate to be a stinker, but 130x32x136 is 565760 cubic centimeters otherwise known as 150 us gallons of water, not 50 ;). Somethin tells me you dont have the dimensions quite right

Anyway, MOST 50gs are pretty similar so here's what I'd reccomend

Powerheads, 2-3 Seio M620
Lighting, either 2x175 metal halide or 4 54watt T5 fixture, the former leaving more flexibility options in the future
Skimmer, anything appropriately sized from Aquamedic, TMC, or Deltec if you're in the UK which I think you are

Hmmm, weird, she definitely said 50g. Stupid question coming up, but are US gallons different to UK gallons?

Thanks for the recommendations, really helpful as I can get all that stuff costed up now too.

Ah I think I've spotted the problem........the measurements I gave were for the cabinet not the tank :D

Lol, that makes more sense :) I was wondering how you were gonna reach the bottom of a 4-5 foot deep tank

Sounds like a pretty standard 4' long 50g then. That being the case I stand by my reccomendations :D
