I need some help...

okay so I have a 5 galleon tank, and I recently recieved some fish.. no idea what they are.. totally new. A friend was getting rid of some fish and asked if I would take them. So of course I did. I've been researching and I just found out 5 galleons is just too small for 8 fish and two suckers.. I feel awful about it. But there is just nothing I can do about it.

Anyways I have some glass beads at the bottom as gravel, and I just bought some gravel to replace it. because i wasnt to give them more room.. and it is rather tacky looking. So I have a gravel washer siphon and a bucket all ready to go and I just realize I have no idea how to do this. do I remove the stones while the fish are still in there, what do I do. I don't want to crush anything. :/

To tell you the truth I have never changed a tank yet, only bowls.. how do I do this stuff...?

You will have to research the fish you are keeping or try and describe them over the board, or contact the person you got them from and ask about the fish you have took on.
Remove the fish into a bucket or large container while you remove the stones and add the gravel, run the filter in the container and put a cover over it so the fish don't jump out.
I suppose you don't have water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph.

What? Ha no.. I have no idea. I don't have those stats. But I do have a heater and it's currently at 81ish

I do know some of the fish.. I have a neon tetra, 2 cherry tetra things :S.. the two bottom feeders, an albino something, one is a tetra and has horizonal strips, two are zebra something and have longer flowing fins, and the las us orangy with thick vertical black strips.

If the fish are in good health with no signs of desease, i would phone an lfs to see if he will take them all of your hands, as all that tank size is good for is a betta, sorry, as the fish will suffer from stress, then desease and then die.

Local fish store or shop, all them fish will not survive in that size tank, and some one has just droped all there promblem onto you, and it will end in tears, as you have got off to a very bad start, if you won't to keep fish, buy the biggest tank you can afford, do your homework first, as it not easy keeping fish, you have a very lot to learn.

From what you've said, you 'may' have cherry barbs, zebra danios and tiger barbs. Put those in google image search and see if they match your fish.
