Hi, I have 3 tetras, 1 algae eater (about 4" long), 1 corday catfish. My tank is 30 gallons. I have recently had a big algae bloom problem for over 3 months, I broke down and bought a uv sterilizer. Algae is all gone, but now I have a spike in amonia, and a bacteria bloom.
My serpai tetra is acting weird, it looks like it is swimming fast and always nose up, but it doesn't go fast. It isn't interested in eating, just swims around acting weird. It doesn't gasp for air, and it doesn't hit bottom. For the way it swims i would think it would get wore out. There is no visible signs of problems.
I'm planning on adding some more fish when my bacteria is settled down. But for now I'm concerned with my Tetra
Tank size: 30 gal
pH: 7.2
ammonia: .25 ppm
nitrite: 20 ppm
nitrate: 0 ppm
kH: 120 ppm
gH: 75 ppm
tank temp: 76 degrees fehrenheit
Volume and Frequency of water changes: I've been doing 20% water changes every other day, when the amonia level is high, but no more then .5. When i change water I add a table spoon of fish salt. Also I have been cleaning the gravel and it is very green water that i get in my bucket. Although my water in tank is milky white. (weird)
Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: whisper filter hanging for 20 gall and 10 gall, filter with carbon.
Exposure to chemicals: none
I heard that salt is a tonic for fish, how much salt is too much salt? In the petstore i notice that they have a cup sitting on the bottom of the tank full of salt. Should I do that and see if it helps the fish?
Suggestions are always welcome, that is why we are all here in this one place.
Thanks in advance,
Kaylee
