i started off adding some serpae tetras to my tank after it had cycled and then about a week later i added some cory julii's. I had 8 tetras and then 4 julii's but one julli died the other day and after looking closer at the others they've all had their fins nipped at and are getting harassed by the tet's, i did ask on here about the compatibility and also looked on on other sites !! So whats happening ? Have i just got troublesome tetras and will they nip at others that they should normally be getting on with !!

my water stats are

nitrite 0
nitrate 40
ammo 0
ph 7.6

cheers charlton

I have 4 of the same tetras in a 60L and they are VICIOUS !!! Ive got 3 guppies (hardly and tail left) and 10 neons, the neons all cower in one corner of the tank as as soon as the serpae tetras spot one out of the corner they all move n and pin them back down, Ive now moved the serpae tetras into my 165L with lager fish, (rainbows, large garumi and kribs) the second they went in they tried the same thing (pinning the female krib in a corner, i think they have learnt that they're the small fry in this tank as when the male krib spent the next 40 mins chasing the tetras ALL OVER the tank till they were knackered, and when they were he kept them pinned in a corner, the second they moved he went at them again, 3 days later i have harmony in the 165 and the tetras know their place, but i still wont put them back in the L as i know what will happen if i were you id get them re homed back to the LFS !!!!

While tetras in general are peaceful,
Serpae tetras and Red eye tetras can be very nippy, so i would remove them from your tank, because as said before if they realize they're the boss then they'll bully your fish.

spoke to my lfs shop today and explained the situation and they were most helpfull (maidenhead aquatics morden) !! They told me to bring back the tetras and they also gave me a credit note for the julli's that i lost so on this evidence i must highly recommend them !!

You might want to point out to them also that your Cory julii will almost 99% certainly be trilineatus.

True julii are very rarely seen in trade and suppliers like to misname so they can charge a higher price :(
For comparison ;)

I have 7 serpae tetra and 4 julli cories in my 20 gallon tank. The tetras did got after my cories for probably a week or two. Eventually things calmed down. I added a nice stone cave and my plants are getting bigger and adding cover. Now my cories take care of themselves. They eat the sinking pellets while the serpae tetras swim around and get the floating debris.

After 6 months of being tankmates I am going to move the cories to a 29 gallon tank with a sand substrate. I added kribs and they are 3 times worse than the tetras.

:good: No shame in it!

Trilineatus are my alltime fave cory for their bags of character, the way they all sit in a bunch of tripods before one of them decides there's work to be done and all of them follow  :hyper:

Good luck getting the Serpaes sorted ;)
