my guppy was looking like she was near giving brith so i put her in a net breeder. overnight she has passed a huge red ball. i can see the babies inside. i think what has happened is that the lining hasn't broken and she's passed them all at once.
Any way i broke the lining and am now proud mum to about 15 babies.
Questions -
1. the babies are very still at the bottom, occassinly moving - is this normal or is it due to the stress of the birth??
2. Why did it happen??
3. Would it happen again??
4. what are the chances of her living (she now looks quite tidy where the red ball was)
5. she is still very fat is there a chance there are more babies to come out??

Sorry so many questions but if at least one could get answered i would be very greatful!

thank you

freya

Hi freddi264 :)

I think you need more specific advice than you're likely to get in this section. I'm going to move your thread over to the Livebearers section. :D

It's possible that the fry weren't quite ready to come out yet (probably why they aren't moving much) and she 'aborted' them due to the stress of being placed into the birthing net. As they are still alive, they were probably close to full term and it is possible that they will make it yet. To prevent the mother from infection, you should dose with a good antibacterial med and keep your tank water extremely clean.

i agree with no soup
one of my females did this when i first started keeping live bearers and used to save all babies - now i do survival of the fittest in a nicely planted tank

All the fry that were delivered by the female either died or i euthanised them as when they grew they had deformities - bent spines , strange shaped stomachs and no eyes

what i did was do a 50% water change right away followed by 20% every other day
after the water change i added melafix and doses this every day for 7 days

my female went on to have lots of healthy babies :)

good luck Sarah xx

Thank you all for the help. Sadly all the babies died. she has had sucessful births before and i hope her next one isn't too stressfull!! She is okay and back to normal being chased!!

My other female gave birht shortly after her and she's hopefully going to have some lovely babies as she is white body with a an orange tail.

thank you

XX
