Seperating Substrates

anybody have any advice on separating dirt/soil from gravel, everybody's help will be much appreciated

Try a strainer... the smaller stuff should fall through and the larger gravel will not.

The thing is i have tetra complete substrate on the bottom then 2-4mm gravel on top of that and looking at changing the gravel to sand, would it be okay to put it on top of the grave and have 3 different layers and would this effect my plants, im giving them fertilizer and co2 just wondering what people think i should do

Sand will tend to sink below, being smaller grained. You'll end up with gravel at the surface. It'll hold off for a while if you have a thick enough layer.
