Selling Platies

To be honest not many places will buy them from you, Since they are so easy to breed. They aren't really worth much. Unless you had a couple of hundred! :)

A local store might take the fish for credit if you're lucky, but it would be pennies on the dollar probably. Still it's better than nothing.

When mine get big enough and start getting colours, after I pick the prettiest ones I want to keep I intend to just ring around a few shops and ask if anyone wants them for free. I don't expect anything for them. I'd just rather give them away then do something awful like have to cull them because I have no more room.

If you're having problems with them giving birth all the time and you're being overrun, get a fish in your tank that will eat fry. I only get fry when I deliberately have the mother give birth in a trap/net - my other fish eat them too quickly otherwise. I don't believe people who say fry will survive in a well planted tank at all. Mine is well planted - one night a platy will be fat and full of little eyeballs - the next day she's not, and not a fry to be seen in the tank! I'm pretty sure my pearl gouramis are the main culprits.

Good luck

It isn't that platy fry will survive in a well planted tank - it is that there is a possibility. I've had fry in the main tank for several days and they hide in plant cover or little hidy-holes. I won't see a fry for a week and then they'll appear.

Definitely ring fish stores, we have two around us that take them, one is normally full so you have to have good timing to find they'll take them, but the other normally always has room. You could get something for them if you are lucky! We sold 18 platy fry on Thursday and got two coldwater fish worth about £5.50 free. :)

In my experience most places wont buy them. And may just take them for free instead.

Depends where you are though.
