how would you go about selecting a pair for spawning? do you look for the same colours or tail types?

are some types a no no? l

say if i spawned spiderman:

with Sookie:

is that a no because of the difference in colours? [i did have a red hm dragon female but she died :(]
what would go well then?

otherwise im going to try and get a CT pair in at work they should be of the same colour, would this be better?

First of all, I'd only breed two bettas that were totally healthy and have always had good health. Don't want to pass any weakness onto the fry.

I'd also match tail types unless I was trying for a new line. So HM with HM, HMPK with HMPK, etc. Maybe if I was putting the time into a line (rather that just occasional spawns), I might do HM with CT to try for combtails and halfsuns, but that's a heck of a lot of work. If you don't match them, not only do you sometimes not know what the fry will be like but you risk deformed fry.

Don't necessarily need to match colours.

Also - don't breed fish with any kind of deformity. For example, rose-tails are pretty but the more RTs are bred together (instead of breeding HMs and getting RT fry), the more extreme the tail will get and it can become a very real burden for the fish. Also, many RTs have a scale deformity so watch out for that. Some DTs also have problems but I can't remember off the top of my head what they are. My advise? Stick with solid, healthy fish of a 'normal' tail type (CT/VT/HM/Delta) and leave breeding/trying to breed RTs/FTs/DTs/Halfsuns until you've got a lot of experience and a good understanding of genetics.

I don't breed myself, but I read too much.
