See Video....fighting

I'm going to ask for help one more time then I will leave y'all alone. I think if you can help me determine this one, I will be on the right track.

I started with 7 bettas added at once into a 30 gal. tank. I did find one was a male and he is now our kitchen fishy in a 3 gal., I since have removed 2 more into a temporary home. I'm not sure if I am getting paranoid on how many males I have or what. This is what happened when I added a new girl today. I removed the darker one as it has been nippy since I added it. The light one is the one I added.



Does it appear to be 2 males, females, or one of each ? I'm stumped

they both look like PK males to me hun, the darker one defo is for sure and lookin at how they are "going at it" i would say the light one is too

I agree they are really wanting to kill each other. Our girls bicker but never had anything that bad

This is the one I did remove. May be a male I agree....if so do you think it will become a real pretty one? I have 2 more tanks coming in. I will need to decide which ones to keep. I seems I may have 4-5 males out of the supposable 8 girls I bought !

The 2nd one definately looks male to me. Here's a pic of another one of ours who lived with the girls for 2 months before we realised and he matured. Guppy_man now has him "Taj" in his signature.

The dark one is defo a male, the light one looks like a female though but it is hard to tell the way the fins are compressed and unflared.

Try the mirror flare test to see if it has a dark beard ?

Wow has to be said that top one is one prudy fish

It is hard to tell with the fins as they are but i'm pretty sure its a PK whether male or female

So if the beard, gills that come out are darker it means male ? If so I have another one that is a male. I was attracted to those light colored ones....oops.

Do you think I would have any luck putting them on Ebay for $1, pick-up only ? I just hate returning them to the store in the little cups

shame your not in the UK i would take them. The beard is not always darker, but if when they flare the flaps under the gills extends past the gills its a male

wow all 5 of my females must've been males cause i saw them all fight so i had to seperate them all :'(

Hi Smiley ! Frustrating isn't it ? Try taking a pocket mirror and put it in front of the bowl and see if they flare. The females will too, but just their gills stick out a bit. When the males do it, it is larger and looks like little ears and a beard pops out. It was hard for me to figure out at first, but once I seen a male do it I can tell. The females will give chase, but if they're fighting like the video I posted....at least one of them is definitely a male. What size tank did you put them in ?


I wish I lived near some of Y'all.....I'm a lonely Betta keeper here in Florida

o there in little 1g things right now :'(
i just moved and havent established my 20g
currently overall in tanks i have 3.
20g - Nothing in it
20g - Nothing (gunna be betta) just needa get it setup
50g - Bearded Dragon
and hopefully soon ill be getting a 55g + but ill prolly make it salt water . or if not ill buy some decent size fish and a Manta Ray xD

You confuse me, you would give a betta 20g but a manta ray only 55g
