Second Tank And Filter Upgrade

I have a 120L tank and an internal filter which is approaching its limit for the size of tank.I have just got a second slightly smaller tank so my plan is as follows.

Get a bigger internal filter and put half of the media from the smaller filter in to the bigger one then leave them both in the 120L tank for a couple of weeks then transfer the smaller one into the new tank leaving original tank with bigger filter.
Or is there a more effective way of both getting the new tank going without causing any problems with the old one.

You should be able to leave about 1/3 of the media in your current filter and move it straight to your new tank as long as you have some fish in there.
Put the other 2/3 in your new filter and run it on your larger tank.
If you have no fish in your new tank, running them together like you have said would also work, although I think you should leave it longer, maybe 4 weeks.
The one change I would make to your plan is to get an external for the larger tank. A bigger internal will just take up more space
