Is purchasing second hand tanks really safe? Is there something a guy could do to make sure that there isnt any nasties in it?

It's usually safe but to be sure, you can use vinegar to clean it or a watered down mixture with bleach. Bleach oxidizes so it shouldn't leave any residue behind when it dries but you can still wash it again afterwards if you want to.

Nothing wrong with second hand tanks. Can save you a lot of money. I used a bleach/water mixture to clean mine.

Second hand tanks are fine depending on it's age you might wanna check the sealent other than that a good scrub & soak in milton baby sterilising fluid rinse & your ready to go, i was given a tank that was in a real bad state doing what i said above brought it up as good as new.

It is good practise to leak test the tank for a day or so, somewhere that a bit of water on the floor won't matter. Go around the side and base seals with a tissue after 24 hours to check for moisture.
