Hi,

Being pretty new to the hobby, I have been reading a lot about different fish, trying to find some good fish for when I eventually get another tank. (I stock my first tank on "what looks good from the LFS and Petco" - not the best way)

Anyway, I have been looking around for a good searchable tropical fish database. I found a couple, but none that would allow really good searches. It would be nice to find something that could search not only names, but stuff like:

type of fish (catfish, cichlid, goldfish, etc)
adult size
temperment
where it swims (top, middle, bottom)
how many recommended to get (since some fish like same species company)
min recommended tank size for the min recommended group
ph ranges
Kh ranges
do they eat algea?
do they breed?
ease of care? (for beginners, or more for experience fish owners?)
etc.

Does anyone know of a searchable database that has anywhere near this capability?

It's great having this place to ask questions, but I would love a searchable database where I can instantly find out something like:
What pleco would do well eating algea in a 20 gallon community tank?
or
What community fish are easy to care for, under 2" adult size, swims near the top of the tank mostly, and is happy in a 10 gallon tank?

If nobody knows of any place that can do searches like that, I am thinking of creating a database and a web site to search it. It might take me months just to set it all up and get enough info in it to be useful, but seems like there should be a place where noobs like me can easily search for stuff in that way.

this should meet some of your needs
I use fishbase all the time
http://www.fishbase.org/search.php?lang=English

howeve this site has an excelent member base
and most if not al your questions will be answered here
also we have an excelent fish index, why not check it out.

I have seen the fish index on this site, and it is very nice

Oh yeah, that google place does sound familiar, maybe I'll try it sometime!

None of the databases I have seen have capabilities for search for fish from 1 family that are a certain size, like certain temps of water, and need a certain minimum tank size. Rather than going through 100 fish profiles and trying to remember what I read about all the breeds - I was just wondering if there was a database out there.

Though by far not the most savy, I am pretty good with computers and programming. If no database is out there with those features, do you think it would be worth my time creating one? Even it I just populate it with stuff from our fish index, and then have links to the fish index in the search results.
