At the moment I only have CO2 for the plants, which are growing ok but not completely as well as I hope...I'm considering using Seachem Flourish Excel...can anyone give me any advice on using this and if it worked well?
I have looked at others on aquaessentials.co.uk and this seems like the best for a complete and lower-budget fert...is this right?
Thanks!!! :good:

Flourish Excel is organic carbon. its used to dose CO2 in your tank.

i think what you talking about is just regular flourish. which is a comprehensive fertilizer full of micro nutrients. it does not contain any Nitrogen, Phosphorous, or Potassium (n-p-k). It is a good addition to your tank. I use a capful every two days in my 60 gallon.

Yeah Flourish Excel is a carbon source for plants usually used for non Co2 tanks. If you want some save yourself some money and buy it from aquatics-online, (I have used them and the service is good) it costs £5.99 from aquaessentials and £4.74 from aquatics-online a saving of over a pound for 100ml, the prices for other seachem products are also much better at aquatics-online.

Plant growth depends on more than CO2. What is your lighting level and period, and if I understand correctly, you are adding no other fertilisers?

Yeah no adding any other fertilisers at the moment....I have 30W of lighting which gives me about 2WPG and this is one for 9-10 hours a day.

Is there a cheaper carbon alternative to Flourish Excel? Another brand that does the same thing perhaps?

Nothing as good as it.

wally6346, I've been using it for 4 days now and Im already impressed!

Tropica Nutrition, KNO3 and little CO2 injection that at the moment isn't diffusing too well.

*thread hijack!*

Ok, quick question then. Currently my 47gal has low light, about 60w (may increase to 90w soon), and I'm starting to dose with Tropica PN+. I was going to DIY CO2 but I think its just too much hassle and I've had diffuser issues.

So, would using Tropica PN+ and flourish excel be a good combo? Should I add anything else to this, ie traces or whatever?

*End thread hijack* :p

I'm not sure what Tropica PN is, but I just started using Excel with an EI light regime, which includes macros and traces.

I got the info from barreport.com, from an artice about non-CO2 but using Excel, written by stcyrwm.

This is what he suggests:

So a 20 gal using excel would get:
2 w/gal light
Dose 1/8 teaspoon KNO3 1-2x a week
KH2PO4, 1/16th, 1-2x a week
Traces, 2mls 2x a week
SeaChem EQ 1/8th once a week
50% weekly water change
Dose 1.5-2x the rec dosing for Excel.

Here's the link to the thread if you want it:

I think I've put this link up about 3 times now... I was so pleased to find the info I thought I'd share the love! I've been dosing this way for a week now and my plants already look better. :good:

Oh, for the traces they suggest using Seachem Flourish amongst other products.
