Hi All,

I'm wanting to replace my current gravel substrate with Seachem Black Fluorite. I know this will be expensive but I am currently spending about $60 every few months on new plants because I can't get anything to grow but before I do this I would like a few points clarified;

1) I have been told that if you go for a complete Fluorite substrate that you don't need to any anything thing else for plants to grow i.e fertilizers. Is this correct?

2) Another thing I have been told is that if I do a complete seachem substrate the water will be always milky/cloudy. Is this correct? They suggest Fluorite on the bottom with gravel over the top.

I don't use CO2 injection either.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

wow, thats a lot to be spending every few months! when introducing plants, some tend to 'melt' when grown submerged as many aquatic plants are grown out of water. Its also a good idea to research the plants you buy, get a name of them, then search them to ensure they are aquatic plants, as many LFS will sell none aquatic plants. If you have any doubts, stick a pic on here and we'll ID them for you.

I have never use Flourite, but from others and a bit of research, all it is is a porous gavel, which means it'll soak up excess fert and save em for a rainy day. IMO very expensive, but does look nice. Cat little does the same job. Perhaps soemone that has any experience with Flourite will chip in?

Not correct with Flourite. I do know others that have used it and they have clear water.

give us some more tank stats and we might be able to help a bit more. What light, ferts are you using?
