Sounds like dropsy :( is she puffed out? Is she otherwise ok?

Hiya
If you mean that the scales are puffed out, rather like a pine cone then its more than likely Dropsy. If thats the case its not good :(

There's not many on this part of the forum, and i haven't had that experience thankfully, so i'd post on emergencies

I would put her in qt and ask in the emergency section, if its dropsy it needs immediate attention.

Put her in a QT tank add some Epson salts to the water (don't use normal salt whatever you do) and try to get some Internal Bacteria stuff to add as well - interpet do one and i had a female recover which is posible but not always likely, lower the water level and keep the water still and clean
good luck

i have internal parasite medicine..a nd aquarium salt... so i should just add the aquarium salt and add internal parasite medicine?

and yes i have already posted in tropical fish emergencies...

Okay, yes it is Dropsy. I would go to LFS and get some Interpet #9 Octozin. As suggested use Epson Salts about 1 teaspoon per gallon in a hospital tank. Follw this and all should be well. We have some other meds in work for dropsy, but available only from a vet like me.

ok i jus put her into a qt tank with clean and still water along with epsom salt.... and i lowered the wate level to about 2 1/2 inches so she doesnt have far to go 2 get to the surface.. she fought me hard and i had to chase her around the tank but eventually i got her.....

Good point :good:

please! don't overdose the salt under any circumstances. Underdose if in doubt. Well done for catching her!

yea i understand that one all 2well..... shes in there now n im on my way 2 the store 4 the medicine... i have internal parasite medicine with praziquantel by jungle but i doubt thats the same thing so im on my way 2 the store...

also.. is it contagious? and what causes it?

no not the same thing. Only 2 options here IMHO. Vet - will probably cost you £10-£15 or Interpet #9 and epson salts. No Not contagious at all

Emma

causes can be a number of internal disases which may have been present before you had the fish. Poor water quality is an issue. If the disease has gone into the kidney of the fish, No treatment is effective. Also some viruses have been known to cause the disease.

there are many many different caused of Dropsy but its all to do with bacteria and parasites as dropsy is only a symptom not the problem itself. Dropsy is where fluid builds up in the fishes body causing it to swell and swell to the point that the scales stick out. The epson salts will help to release these fluids and let the swelling go down but it will not cure the cause.

I would do a few large water changes on the tank she came from oer the next week as it could be the bacteria is very high - it will always be there but water changes keep it low

please please what ever you do, do not add aquarium salt as it will make it worse

Keep us posted with her progress
