about how much should you expect to pay for a typical rectangular, 30-gal tank (no hood or anything else)? I got mine second-hand cheap, so I'm not sure what to expect to pay for a new one. Any ideas? Also, I'm not against going slightly bigger if the price difference isn't much, as the stand can hold up to a 50-gal. I tried looking on the petsmart site but they only have the higher-end brands/types on there.
Thanks!

#you could probable pick one up for about £30 - £40

have a lookon ebay !!

Check ebay and your local craigslist. you may have better luck picking up a cheaper tank at a WalMart or Meijer. Also if you have a Petland, try there. They usually have pretty good prices compared to Petsmart. I got my whole kit at Meijer for $199 I think, that was a 55 with heater, filter, tank, hood, lights, ect.

You can also replace cracked panels of glass on fish tanks, however i have no idea how you'd go about doing that, however i expect it'd be cheaper than buying a brand new tank (although probably a lot more hassle).

in the UK i picked a bare 20g for about £20 new at pets at home (american equivalent is probably petsmart or walmart or something, rubbish for fish but good and cheap for equipment)

My local lfs sells 30G tanks for 40 bucks. Thats pretty cheap though as i dont even see alot of tanks online close to that price. So maybe 50 bucks atleast fopr a new one prob. I dont know, the prices range quite a bit depending on the store and the brand of tank (if it has a namebrand)

I just got off the phone with some stores... at the lfs they want $64 for the tank, at PetSmart they want $59 for the tank and hood set. I think if I have to go with one of these it will be the one at PetSmart. At least I'll get an extra hood for it!

I badly cracked a tank. The set up had been running a few years with cold water fish then. As I was doing a water change and putting lid back on I dropped it onto tank side and with light fitting in it was pretty heavy, completly cracked the tank. I had to put fish in a bucket and empty rest of water as I could see the crack growing by the minute. I then put them in a smaller hospital tank as hadnt money for a new tank there and then. When i finaly got a new one and set it all back things were never right again and from the stress of it all and them being stuck in a smaller tank I lost them all. Was a lovely 5 foot set up. A nightmare it was. My biggest nightmare now is one cracking or bursting whilst im not in, seem to reading alot of this happening to tanks, im obsessed checking mine lol.
