i had to go to my freinds house today, cause his tank was over stalked and he needed to give away some fish, which i have room for. one of the fish i got was a rainbow gourami, boy is it (he didn't tell me if it's a he or she, i'll call him) tame. being in with a bunch of cichlids and oscars, i don't blame it!

It's great to here that you saved the poor fish... But - what's a 'rainbow' gourami :*) ? Do you know the scientific name by any chance? :p

Yay on saving the Gourami! Good job!

And Sylvia, I have heard about 2 kinds of Rainbow Gouramis...the first one is a color variant of the Dwarf Gourami - Colisa lalia. And the second one, is another name for the Banded Gourami - Colisa fasciata :)

Oh right :p thanks - I thought they might be some rare or exotic species I'd never heard of :dunno: ...

A very colorful one at that - 'rainbow' and all.
I can see why they might call a dwarf or banded that though.

If this is the fish you have, a way to sex them is to look at whether they are realy colorful ro not. In dwarf gouramies (2"), males are birghtly colored, females are silvery. In banded (3-4"), males are realy brightly patterned with vertical bands while females are duller, with less contrast. The dorsal fins of males are also much longer than females and, in dwarf gouramies in particular, the anal fin takes on a 'bulbous' appearnce. Males are also mroe streamlined while females are deeper-bodied and noticeably wider when viewed from above.

And these fish were with aggressive cichlids, including oscars, etc?
It realy is lucky for them you took them on!

I've never heard of 'saving a gourami' before.......Ithink only the betta people use it :p
