Just putting together a new setup and I need to know which sand to use, various searches have thrown up childrens safety sand or sandblasting sand, are these OK to use? The sand will be used in only part of the tank as a top substrate.

Simon :D

IMO sandblasting is a bit fine, but swimming pool filter sand and childrens play sand is normaly better.

Wat are you using as a base. all my tank I only have a base mostly flourite and top sand for a month or two then its mix anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong I'm newly returning to this after a good few years!:

I was going to use some seachem onyx mixed with vermiculite as a base, with an area to the front of the tank fairly bare with sand (purely for aesthetics and a little variety) then fine gravel as top of the rest... i didn't think about the mixing issue, is this due to the species of fish?
