When you use the siphon, you hover slightly above the sand and all the waste gets sucked up but not the sand.

i meant how do you clean it before you put it in the tank, sorry, I'm tired and should have explained a little more )

Put it in a Buket, large bowl, tub, and run a hose or tap into the sand, (smaller amounts of sand at a time is best, i found.) I used my hand to stir it up as the water ran in and waited till the water ran clear.
