My question is if you are going to buy sand for your tank can you still use an ungravel filter? Is there a special one you can buy or can you modify a normal filter to not let the sand through?

as far as i know you can not use and undergravel filter with sand, there is no room in between particles for water to flow and filter properly.

There is always room. Think about a pool filter layered with sand. The water is pulled through the sand.

The sand compacts over time and the water flow is severely lowered, therefore making the undergravel filter obsolete.
