Been researching this a lot, and see many people agree sand is the best substrate. I want to keep corys in my new community tank too, so they'd be happier. What I want to do, though, is use a dark sand, such as black sand. what's the best type? Not worried about plant food stored because I will use liquid food plus pellent food for the rooting varieties, (although if there is a black sand which incorporates nutrients all well and good).

Yep go dark if you can, many LFS do black and other coloured sand, whilst more expensive than the 'play' sand most people use I can definately say its worth it :good:

There are a few brands on the market, as far as I know it's only aquarium sand (as opposed to play sand) that comes in black. The most common seems to be CaribSea Tahitian Moon Sand which can be ordered off the internet, no doubt there are others but it's generally a case of whatever the shops (whether 'real' or online) stock.
