i want to change to sand from gravel. it is a trigon 350 and it has been running for 1 month now, i have fish as well

i want to no the easyest way to change to sand

thankyou

i would think the easiest way to change to sand is to remove all the decorative items out of the tank ie rocks, ornamens, plants etc...... then scoop all the gravel out using somehting to scoop it with and then add sand, i woudlnt worrie about the odd bit of gravel being left behind as you wont see it once the sand is put in the aquarium.
o and i would remove some of the water whilst doing it ,as it will make it a bit more easier. :good:

wot about fish?

is it a hard job?

i wouldnt like to say personally because im not sure but whatever you do wash the sand well, this will prevent you from staring into a tank of cloudy water for days. what i did is just get a bucket or washing up bowl or something, but i wouldnt wash all the sand at once, you will find doing it bit by bit will be more effective. So, then you put some sand in the bucket, fill with water, swish around, wait a couple of seconds to let the sand settle, but not the dirt that you want to get rid of, then pour out the water, continue to do this until the water runs clear, and it will take a while. What sand are you going to use? i recommend argos playsand, it looks really good and is really cheap (3 or £4 per bag), but one bag wont be enough for your tank, im sure it says how much in the catalogue. good luck!

edit: it'll be less stressful for the fish if you remove them from the tank whilst changing substrate, but wash the sand first before taking the fish out, because you want them out for as little time as possible.

thank for the info

ye i was going to use argos playsand as i hear it is cheap and alot of people use it

any one else got any info

How many fish do you have?

12 but not very big

In that case it may be easier to move the fish when you do the change over.

i have a spare tank il put them in that for the day 55L it has heater and filter

I wouldnt bother taking out the fish. Just take out all the decors and dump your sand into it. Make sure you raise and boil your sand though.

boiling sand? well thats something ive never heard before. Plus I would remove fish as it would be very stressful for them, and having sand dumped on them is not something they are very grateful for.

It would be even more stressful if you net them out and put them in another tank.

Most people wouldn't place them in another tank. Once the sand is washed, the process will only take around 20 minutes to add the sand, add the decor back into the tank, and replace the fish. When I remove my fish for whatever reason, they just go in a bucket for the 20 minutes they are out.

yeah, i would remove the fish, definitely
