Quick hijack...if you are stuck with river rock gravel for awhile, what bottom feeder would do okay for a few months? I'll be changing it eventually but its not sharp and not hurting anything for now?

On the subject of snails multiplying most opinion seems to suggest that if you over feed then the snails will multiply since there is abundant food to do so. I plan on dropping a few Malaysian Trumpet Snails in mine when I can as regardless of the truth or not of anaerobic pockets under the sand, the idea of them turning it over and going about their business appeals
And lots of people use Argos play sand which is £3 for 15kgs. Your 180l tank is probably something like 100cm x 40cm so 15kgs should get you a depth of about 1" if you use the calculator on Charterhouse Aquatics site. So spend £6 and have an average of 2" with some higher bits and some lower bits.
I wanted black sand though and that's more expensive
