I am thinking of changing my 55 gal. from gravel to sand. I would like to know the pros and cons of these to substraights. I would like to hear what you all have to say about them both.
Also will sand hurt any of these fish that I have? Will they eat the sand and not be able to digest it?
I have read a good articel on here about changing from gravel to sand, helped out a lot. But I still had those questions.

I use sand in my tanks rather than gravel.
Sand is easier to keep clean as it doesn't trap waste in it like gravel, if you have corys i would go for sand as they prefer a sand or very fine rounded gravel substrate as they sift through the substrate to look for food.

although i currently have gravel in all my tanks i plan to use sand in my new tank, i think it looks better.

I have sand for the same reason. It just looks better, and plants grow better with the sand.

Sand...
Imo looks better
Is easier to clean, because waste doesn't fall into the sand and get trapped.
Is preferred by many fish
Is better for most plants to grow in

however,
it looks dirtier quicker because waste just sits on top.
could possibly get kicked up into your filter making it noisy.
and that's all I could really think of for cons.

Obviously i'm saying go for the sand...as you will find that is what most people on this forum will say.

I Would Use Sand, But My Tank Came With Stones, And I Cant Be Bothered Changing It :D

I have Silica sand on top of a gravel/Laterite mix base substrate... a slightly darker, coarser grain than usual... looks natural... doesn't 'waft' up into the water... is excellent for holding down real plants... keeps my Cory's barbules in tact... is easy to clean: just hold the syphon 'near' the surface and you suck up all the dirt leaving the sand...

As you can see from the picture, corys love to dig in the sand. :D

I have 2 tanks one is a 180 gal with sand and the other is a 30 gal with gravel.

But my vote go's with Sand !

how would you go about changing from a gravel to sand????

in a 75 gallon tank??
surely you would need to keep at least half the water?

i just started cycling a 20 gallon sand tank, looks awsome

Yeah i'll i'd do is keep 25% of the water more if you can it dosen't matter ! Scrape out all your gravel then add your sand, Then add the old water into your tank leave it for a couple of days if you can then add some tap water don't fill your tank up then a couple of days after add more until your tank is full. Then you should be able to add your fish within a week .
