I would start with about 30lbs of sand and go from there. I personally don't like to put a lot of substrate in tanks, so that is the route I would take.

I just set up my 29 gallon 2 days ago and I put in 40 pounds...which is perfect!

Rule of thumb is about 2 pounds of substrate per 1 Us gallon.
