Sand Substrate.

Hey all,
I was just wondering if plants benefit from having a sand substrate or are the results equal with both sand and gravel? The reason I am asking is my new tank is due to arrive on Tuesday afternoon and I am eager to get it set up as soon as possible. The only thing is I haven't bought any sand (my desired substrate) yet as Argos are still out of stock.
