Hi,

I'm planning the setup of a 48x18x18 planted setup. I'd like to use a sand substrate mixed with plant substrate. Initally I had thought of using a whiteish coloured sand, but due to colours of plant substrate, have changed my mind and decided to go for black sand. I've not had much luck finding any though and the best I can come up with is Carib-Sea's Tahitian Moon.

The problem is, as can be seen on their webpage, they do not recomend this for bottom dwellers. I was wondering if anyone in the UK can recomend black sand....or has actually tried the Carib-Sea's stuff with bottom dwellers.

the only black sand that I'm aware ok available in the UK
is made by BD trading as is around £3 for 1kg.
that is very expensive for a 48x12.

it seems odd that the moon sand is not recomended for bottom dwellers as 99% of those fish prefer sand as a substrate.

Myself I use pool filter sand, as it is ascetically pleaseing and relativly cheap.

I've been using CaribSea's Tahitian Moon black sand in two tanks for over two years now with no problems. Including fish that bury themselves in the sand such as ChacaChaca catfish, Banjo catfish and various species of freshwater puffers (Congo, Fahaka and Dragon).
Also fish that sift the substrate such as Kribs, Cories and plecs.

None have ever come to harm because of the sand.

That's exaclty what I was wanting to hear :D

Thanks for the replies guys.

SirMinion, regarding your answer in my question about the Carib-Sea Tahitian Moon sand......do you have any pictures of the tank with this in it?

Also, I'm trying to work out how much to put into the tank...I'm mixing it with planting substrate and was thinking at a ratio of 2:1 with the greatest being the Tahitian sand.....do you have any suggestions for a tank of this size?
