so im getting sand for my 10 gallon soon. ive decided to set it up and there are no fish or anything in ther yet just water. i want to know how u have to take care of sand, and is there anything special i need to do with the sand.

thanks

i currently have play sand in my 20 gallon tank. it looks pretty good, just before you put it in you should rinse/soak it with water only, NO SOAP. basicaly its soak, drain, soak, drain and so on. you wanna get all the junk out of the sand, the stuff that floats. but once you get it in the tank it takes about 3-4 day before it completely settles and then it looks great. one thing to remember when vaccing you tank just hold the vacc right above the surface of the sand and it will suck the junk off the sand with not taking much sand up.

also remember to turn your filters off untill the sand settles.

If you are using your sink to drain the water from your bucket, as your dumping the water you can use a fish net to capture any floating particle before it falls in. I made this mistake and had to take apart my disposal (woops)

I'm Using tahitian black moon sand and it looks great, just make sure you dont get black beauty as this has lots of iron particles in it
and could make your fish sick

im going to have to disagree with you on that. imo, leaving the filter on with floss will help clear the water of some the dust. once the water is starting to become clear, i would suggest stirring the sand vigorously to make all the dust and other stuff come out, so later on it will not be cloudy if you happen to stir it.

i agree with Dorkhedeos, i left my filter running and it helped the water clear up a lot faster.

hmm mabe ill let it settle for a day no filter then stir and turn the filter on how does that sound???

Ok, just a question as I've never heard of this method.....

using floss, what do you do and is it ok with only certain filters....

I use two pengien 150 bio filters and My impellers get jammed up with just the hint of sand.

I checked out the hardware section but was given advice of using AP sponge blocks, which didnt provide the amount of flow required to get the biowheel spinning

so Im up for furthr advice

take Dorkhedeos's advice as it seams this may be better
