Sand + Plants

I`m currently building my first tank and i want sand on the bottom, but i`ve been told that i need a layer of something else underneath (aquarium pete)?

So how much pete do i put down and how much sand?

And also what effect is the pete going to have on my nitrate amonia and nitrate levels?

Sand and plants are fine!

My tank is 48 US gallons, and i used:

Almost all of one of the larger boxes of first layer laterite.... its 1oz or 28g or laterite per US Gallon..

30 kg of playsand.. which gave a generous 2 inch covering.. so may stretch to do alarger tank. depends on the dimensions.. my tank is 101 x 50 x 41 cm.
