I have a freshwater tropical aquarium (90 litre) and am about to set up a new larger tank (165 litre). The exisitng one has fine gravel on the bottom, which I find is fine for plant growth, but I do like the look of sand. Are there any advantages/disadvantages in using sand and would there be any difference in plant growth?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have both gravel and sand tanks, and both plants grow well in both, i guess good lighting is the key to good plants, but im no expert..

I really like sand and would love to convert all my tanks to sand..

Dosn't matter much, the waste could drop through the gravel providing nutrients for plants, not much to say really, it depends more on the nutrients in substrate, thats what will make your plants grow better.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have just seen the other threads on this topic, so have been reading those and have decided to maybe go for the sand.

Thanks again for your help. :)
