Depends what fish you have. IMO gravel is easier to maintain, but sand is much preferred by bottom dwelling fish, and I feel it is essential for corydoras.
Sand looks nicer though, and is cheaper (£4 for a big bag of playsand from b&q, and I've heard its 99p at big tescos).

Buy playsand from any hardware or garden store, it's cheaper in America.
Alternativly, buy pool filter sand, This is still cheap and requires no washing, you can out it straight in the tank .

You can if you want, but it will just mix.
Not too sure where you would buy pool filter sand, there's not a lot of places selling the stuff up here....because who in their right mind would have an outdoor swimming pool in Scotland? You'd only be able to use it 4 weeks a year max . Though global warmings progressing nicely...
But yes, hardware stores would be your best bet, or anywhere that does swimming pools .
