Sand Or Gravel ... Which Is The Better Substrate For Plants?

Sand or gravel ... which is the better substrate for plants? I would be obliged if members kindly also give their reasons as to they chose one over the other. This would help me understand the qualities of the substrates better. Any link to such articles too would be appreciated.

there isnt a difference really, sand is easier to plant in though...

Only way to make it better (although not essential) is to have some from of nutrient substrate under it or on its own.
