Sand On Top?

I've been looking around for something like this and finally found it. But i don't know if i can put it under sand. The description makes a big thing of under gravel and doesnt mention sand. Please could someone say if its possible to put it under sand.

sorry to hi-jack the thread a little... but i was looking at the same stuff earlier today. cat litter? i know its clay based but does it have the required nutrition for good plant growth? .. or is it like just clay?

cat litter? soaks up excess nutrients then releases back into water column

ohhh would it be a good idea to use a layer of that mixed into a layer of local steam mud? do you think it would provide a very fertile substrate but not so much to get massive algae blooms?
