Sand N Food Issue

hi guys, i have a 160uk gallon mbuna tank. but iv always used gravel in there, iv had success in breeding so i know its not a major problem, but my friend who has a smaller mbuna tank insists i must change to sand as it makes them much happier? is this true?

also whats the best food for mbuna's. currently feed them flakes and pellets. just wondering what everyone else is feeding theres for best colour outcome and so on.

I'm no expert but I know Mbuna like to play with the sand like dig and move it all around the tank so maybe there could be some truth in that but I don't know.

I feed mine New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula, it's really good stuff and they love it!
