Sand Instead Of Gravel Please Help

basically i was jsut wondering if i will still be alrite with most plants in sand or shud i have fake one? i personally hate plastic ones but i would like to try sand instead of gravel, is there anything special i should no about it?

i have a heavily planted tank with sand
the only problem i have is with smaller carpeting plants/grasses, i find it hard to anchor them in sand.

i reccomend a layer of gravel or something underneath

i have a problem with the oxygenating plants and other large (Tall plants) not that i cant grow them infact they grow too much and im there every day chopping them i really onli want small carpet kinda plants all over the foreground and toward the back with jsut a few bushy plants? would i be wise sticknig to gravel or getting sumthing else i have seen chopped up slate that looks nice what do you think?
