Sand In Filters

Im using really soft sand called super naturals from the lfs one of my fish are a stingray and I have a 180 gallon tank and a ehiem 3e now just put the sand in and im wondering when the ray picks up the sand would it get in the filter and damage it?

i 'clog' my filter head with a sponge so that all the stuff that goes in are stuck there. whenever i wash i first clear the sponge, on top of the rest, simple.
