Sand/gravel Substrate?

Hello, I recently purchased a 55gallon tank ($75US for tank+stand+hood+filter ) and I was looking to use a sand substrate. I don't know where I heard it from but I vaguely remember someone telling me that a gravel+sand substrate was a good combination, is this true? if so should the sand be the bottom layer or should the gravel be on the bottom?

I would go with just sand, it's easier to clean. Sand and gravel together will eventually mix together and look a mess.

Agreed. I should know, started off with fine black gravel, decided to put sand on top, looked okay until corys messed it all up and when i came to cleaning it just mixed, so took all of it out and put sand in. Plus sand looks better.
