at the moment my tank has gravel, i will one day change to sand but for now i would rather not muck about (it is running really well, <touch wood>) with it. however i tried a little experiment with a tupperware cheese container, filled it with sand and placed it in the corner (obviously it looks rather silly), my corys love it, they sleep and play in it all the time. now the question, i would like some suggestions on a larger container which would be both safe and not look silly, any ideas?

This is gonna be very vague, but maybe osmeone else can be more specific for you.

If you fix a long sheet of some sort of thin, highly flexible plastic (can't think of a name).... You could just cut a long strip of it, drill some tiny holes in the edge and wire the sides together, and you have a perfectly suitable circle. \o/ Force ti into the gravel maybe, then take the gravel inside of it out and replace with sand. You can even melt the edges of it a bit to smooth it out...

I need to start telling myself NOT to post when I'm dizzy and feverish, because my responses are silly.

Yeah like KeddyPie said, you basically need to contain the sand, but have the container beneath the gravel so it doesn't look unnatural. For example, you could bury your cheese container in the gravel and fill it with sand so that you couldn't see it.

How about a very shallow terra cotta pot?

I think you'll need the dish to stick up somewhat above the gravel though, or else your sand and gravel will start to mix.

Edit: I just had another thought. You could take a regular terra cotta pot and put it on its side with the mouth angled slightly up and then fill it partially with sand. Then it would serve as a nice sandy cave for the cories to hang out in.

i like the idea of the terracotta pot........will probably give that a try, unless someone can think of anything else? :D
