Is it correct that 'Multis' only need an inch or so of sand substrate - as they don't strictly 'bury' their shells like other shelldwellers but just 'move' the sand from around the shells... in other words, why give them more sand to move/make more work for them?...

Also, should the empty shell layer be 'packed solid' so very little substrate is exposed/seen?...

An inch is fine, it really doesn't matter much. The fish prefer them packed together, but if you scatter them they'll do this themselves. In the end there's no need to overcomplicate - add the sand, add the shells, add the fish, and it will work itself out.

I agree with freddy K. Don't bother aquascaping much either, these guys can really dig.
