I have a choice between Play Sand and Sandblasting Sand (I think it's 18 grit), as my substrate sand. For a brief time, I had a shoal of 3 cories in my 5 gallon with sandblasting sand, and it appeared to be too heavy for them to 'play' in, as everyone says they do. I know playsand has a dubious reputation for being very very fine, but I'm toying with the idea of getting some for my 20 gallon, regardless.

I have a choice of a few grits of sandblasting sand, 18 being the coarsest (it's like a very fine gravel, almost. It's ideal for my 5 gallon, imho), and playsand. I already own a big honking bag of 18 grit sandblasting sand, but I'm wondering if a lighter sand would be better for me. Recommendations? What sorts of things should I consider when making my choice?

My tank is going to be planted, and it'll have a shoal of six cories and MTSs.

i just bought some play sand, i hope its ok, ill have 2 or 3 cories in it. not sure yet.

well, theoretically, both will be fine. :D i've read that read-me many times. basically, i'm trying to decide if the 18 grit, which the cories are unable to play in, is too coarse, and if maybe the too fine playsand would be better. i was hoping for pros and cons. thank you, though.

I used Quickrete Commercial medium sand. Its not as fine as playsand but not as coarse as sandblasting sand. My loaches and birchirs love it.

I'm not sure, maybe you can mix the play and sandblasting sand half/half
I just added some river sand into my tank and everyone loves it. Problem was i didn't get all the silt out and it clouded up my water a bit. I'm praying my filet takes it out.
