ok so i have abit of a problem with my sand at the minute. its kind of messy on the surface of the sand with dead plant leafs and poop from the fish.now how would i go about cleaning the sand, i cant use a vac because the particles are just to small, now is there any other way of getting rid of all that muck thanks john

If you use a gravel cleaner and syphon the stuff into a bucket the sand will settle on the bottom. You can tip the water out and put the sand back in the tank. You can also kink the syphon hose to reduce the speed the water drains out and this will prevent most of the sand being removed from the tank.

an easier way is to skip the vac entirely and just use the end of a pipe - put it as near to the bottom as you can, but not low enough to suck up the sand - the rubbish on the bottom will normally just get dragged in without losing too much sand (the odd little bit here and there - depends how careful you are :))
