im setting up a freshwater community tank (20 gal)and wondered if i put snails and live plants will the snails eat the plants :/

You could try Malasian trumpet snails. I have them in my tank and they do a really good job at cleaning up uneated food. I have plants in that tank and I never see them on it. I always only see them in the substrate... which makes them a good sand sifter if you have sand (I have gravel).

apple snails do not eat plants.
and the gen rule is 2.5 gal per apple snail
so 8 apple snails would be ok for your tank
