Should you use salt and what is it good for?
I have some cory and speckled catfish is it safe for them?

Cories aren't very tolerant of salt so I highly suggest not using it. I am not sure about the catfish but I am sure they don't need it either. I would just stick to straight freshwater for those guys. :D

I agree, some catfish are very sensitive to salt and it can burn their skin.
just skip the salt unless they are ill.

In fact nearly all catfish have no scales....so the salt burnes them. So yeah I wouldn't use salt with catfish fullstop

For medicinal lengths of time salt sensitive species (scaleless, catfish) will have no problems coping with salt.
Other than treating for illness, don't bother putting salt in the tank
