I have a tropical tank and it was suggested to me to use aquairium salt in it as well like 50mg per gallon of water what would be its purpose?
is it nessecary? do you add it when doing a water change or just in general like once a week ?

Freshwater tanks don't need salt added.

It's an old fashioned idea, used to reduce stress from poor water conditions on the fish, but the hobby has moved on a lot since those days and it's just not necessary any more.

i've never added salt into any of my tanks,

i'm no expert but i think its only used to helping to recover injured/poorly fish or to set up a brackish tank?

Not necessary, salt should only be used for the purposes of medication if necessary.

thanks peeps.wow some people sure like to get you to buy stuff you don't really need to have/use..
