Ive been catching up on the boards and a question kind of poped up in my mind. Just what fish is "the salt treatment" toxic to? cuz it sounds like salt is a wonderful cure for alot of stuff that gives fish the  ?

Pl*cos also dont do well with salt. Many people say that Gouramis, Bettas and other lanyrinth fish dont do well in salt but my houramis are in salt and have been for over a year and they are fine. Its up to you on that one.

Hi,

Most, if not all, species within the same family as catfish cant tolerate salt. As to bettas and gouramis, some websites say its harmful while others say it is benificial :dunno:

P.T.

what about plants? and... any idea of what concentration of salt will do in the fish that cant tolerate it? i mean, what is the toxic lvl in ppm that will really do in a fish? Am i right in thinking that the osmotic presure differential is what makes salt such a good cure for several of the icky things that hurt my babies? ;)

Im pretty sure that if you use doc wells aquarium salt and not Sea Saly your plants will be fine but i am not sure.

smb cories are fine in salt? thats would be nice cus i got two little ones and my guppies and barbs love salt. I heard neons are sensitve to salt though. Does that include glowlights and black neon tetras?
Well, depends on who you want to believe. I see so many posts at so many forums saying no scaless fish can live with salt added or that it burns their skin. I've kept plecos in the past and added salt after every water change. Same with tetras, I know people that add salt in their tetra tanks and have for years. Personally, I think all fish are fine with salt and it makes for a healthier tank.

I used to say that you shouldn't add salt with scaleless fish because I didn't want to start arguments but I figure my experience should count as much as anyone elses whether they agree with it or not. :)

smb:

Cory's are perfectly fine in salt.

I'm inclined to agree. I went to my lfs to get some supplies (setting up a hospitasl tank) and I picked up some Doc Wellfish's aquarium salt. I asked whether this would be ok with my corys. She said it would be fine and it's a shame that so many people think otherwise. I was still unsure so I only added a half dose to help damaged fins on an angel while using medicine. Everyone seems grand, no different. Oh, I also have some scaleless fish like loaches and an L134.

I am not sure whether I should add more (as I only did half dose). smb - what do you think?

Actually thats quite good to know, cheers smb, I only advised otherwise from the comments on here, never tried adding it yet.

I always added full strength. I know that my opinion is very much in the minority, here and at every other forum and web site I have ever seen online and I fully expect someone to challenge me every time I say it. I'm not going to argue with them but IMHO, all fish are perfectly fine in salt and it makes for a healthier tank.

Your welcome bro. It's just another myth I am trying to dispel here, just like he bloat is incurable myth. Now have people had fish that died and they attribute it to salt? I'm sure they have but I just don't believe it. I think most read something online without experienceing it and it snowballs from there to where we are now. Who knows, maybe the person who wrote the article online heard about it and believed it also. Like I said, I figure I'll be challenged on it and I won't argue or debate it, I just know from my own experience that all fish are fine with salt.

 :look: see? this is what im talking about, there is no good list out there that says NO! NO NO.. no salt for "XXXX" cuz he will die instantly and disolve up in a cloudy mess.. one person says not with XXXX, then the next says ive done it with XXXX
